Survive the Holidays with a Cranberry Manhattan

November 22, 2015 at 6:12 pm By

Just in time for the holidays, this simple twist on a classic Manhattan was inspired by my previous twist The Cherry Manhattan. And as a happy by-product you’ll end up with a delicious batch of bourbon infused cranberries, as well as a bottle of cranberry infused bourbon.

Bourbon Infused Cranberries, and Cranberry Infused Bourbon

  • 2 cups bourbon/rye/whiskey (500ml, 16oz)
  • 2 cups simple syrup* (divided)
  • 1 cup cranberries
  • two vanilla pods, sliced lengthwise
  • zest from half an orange (other half is for the drink)
  • 1 piece of real cinnamon bark
  • optional: allspice berries and cloves

Preheat a water bath to 135F (57C). In a zip-top bag, combine the bourbon, ΒΌ cup of simple syrup, cranberries, orange zest, cinnamon, and vanilla. Press out as much of the air as possible, seal tightly, and then submerge. Let infuse for at least 2 hours, but not more than 4. A sous vide machine is optional; a covered pot of water will work just as well for this purpose.

*To make simple syrup, combine 2 cups of sugar with 2 cups of water in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer, then stir gently until the sugar has completely dissolved. Cool and transfer to a clean container.

Remove the bag from the water bath, open, then carefully strain. Discard the cinnamon, orange zest, but save the vanilla. Transfer the cranberries and vanilla to a clean mason jar, then top with simple syrup. Transfer the bourbon back into its bottle and label. You can use these cranberries instead of maraschino cherries in your favourite recipe. And you can use this bourbon in your favourite glass.

Cranberry Manhattan

  • Good quality, clean ice
  • 2 parts cranberry infused bourbon
  • 1 part sweet vermouth
  • 1 to 2 dashes bitters, such as Angostura
  • Orange peel
  • spoonful of bourbon cranberries, plus more for garnish

For the Manhattan, add a spoonful or two of our boozy cranberries to a cocktail shaker and muddle. Add ice, bourbon, vermouth, and a dash of bitters. Shake it like you stole it, then strain into your favourite glass. Garnish with orange peal and a few more boozy cranberries.
